"Without Sicily, Italy leaves no image in the soul. Sicily is the key to
"The purity of the contours, the softness of everything, the exchange of
soft colors, the harmonious unity of the sky with the sea and the sea to
the land... who saw them once, shall possess them for a lifetime”
(J.W.Goethe, “Viaggio in Italia”, 1817)
Isola di Levanzo
Levanzo, unspoiled paradise, like few still exist today. Along with Favignana and Marettimo
and the two small islets of Formica and Maraone is part of the Egadi islands Marine Protected
Area, which is the largest marine reserve in Europe (53.992 hectares).
Its sea is a show of blue tones and the seabeds are made up of oceanic Posidonia,
the largest and best preserved algae plain of the Mediterranean, nursery area of
a rich and colorful marine life which also houses the Pinna nobilis (bivalve
mollusk of great naturalistic importance).
The Egadi islands are an area of high biodiversity. The fauna includes European Community
protected species, including the rare Mediterranean monk seal, sea turtle (Caretta caretta),
dolphins and bottlenose dolphins. Among the seabirds are the gull, cormorant, kingfisher and
a species at risk of extinction, the storm petrel (Hydrobates pelagicus). The habitat of
the coastal zones is extended pavements in vermetids, born from the cementification of the
shells, which constitute a real reef above the water and in the seabed we find the coral
and numerous submerged and semi-submerged caves.
